13.03.2025: SFS Annual Meeting and Seminar on ‘Sweden in Nato’ with Swedish Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Carl Magnus Nesser

About

Our 2025 Annual General Meeting will be held on 13 March at Zunfthaus zur Saffran.

Following the Annual General Meeting, we invite you all to the seminar on: ‘From neutrality to Nato: Swedish security policy in challenging times’ with Swedish Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Carl Magnus Nesser.

As of 7 March 2024, Sweden is a full member of NATO. It’s the end of an era. Sweden’s neutrality has been a cornerstone of its modern foreign policy and its statebuilding practice.

After losing Finland to Russia during the Napoleonic Wars, Sweden declared itself neutral in 1815. It was not until the onset of WWII that Sweden’s neutrality stance was tested. Its wartime actions in breach of this policy have since been scrutinised. It’s a complex issue that has remained a topic of debate. Nevertheless, the neutrality policy remained in place until the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Keynote Speaker

Carl Magnus Nesser is the Swedish Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. During the NATO application, he served as Legal Director and Chief of Staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Legal Secretariat, giving him unprecedented insights into the NATO application and its foundation. He has previously been the Swedish Ambassador to Israel and Iraq, and Head of the Minister’s Office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Carl Magnus Nesser has also served at the UN mission in New York and the OSCE delegation in Vienna.
